China
2 - 3 England |
England went ahead early in the game after Joe Barnwell took advantage of a rare mistake by Chinese keeper Zhao
Tie. China refused to be cowed though, and Rosehill striker Son Yuen equalised before half time then put China
ahead just after the break. The goal was marred by an injury to Graeme Tittle who collided with Yuen as he tried
to stop him scoring. England brought Terry Beck on, and began mounting counterattacks, but the Chinese defence
initially looked impervious, Wang Weifeng in particular foiling many attacks. Finally, Joe Barnwell got past
Weifeng and slotted the ball past Tie to equalise. Then, with just minutes left, young Mark Fenwick struck the
ball home to win the game. |

Malta
3 - 2 Italy |
Malta played a terrific game against an Italian team that for the only time this championship looked lethargic
and disorganised. Mario Darmanin and Etienne Azzopardi gave Malta a 2-0 lead as they went into half time, and
Italy's previously solid defence was shaken enough for Milo Orlandi to be brought on in place of Carlos Paulous.
Italy started the second half well, Peter Raddeli striking the ball home, but Malta continued to cause them
problems and Darmanin scored another. After the loss of Thomas Magro, there were misgivings about Malta's
striking ability as Paul Pace failed to impress, but Darmanin has been a revelation. His two goals this match
bring his total to three, his first being scored only minutes after coming on as a substitute last game. Malta
hung on to their lead despite another Italian goal, scored by Marco Zola, successfully avenging their previous
4-0 defeat in the First Round. |
